The existence of liberal democracy in this era is inevitably true. Liberal democracy absolutely bringing values of democracy is closed to social and cultural condition where a country produced it. One of those significant values is liberalism ala America. This paper is by no means a comprehensive account of democracy or more accurately, liberal democracy, in America. In fact, it is intended to highlight on the shift of Indonesian urban values and assumptions in relation to the existence of American cultural traits. The changes are easily found in urban societies where they are characterized by multiculturalism and pluralism. Even, most Indonesian parents found the difficulties in implanting their family values toward their children who are growing up in urban societies. Moreover the differences of historical and cultural background make any conflict in urban societies, mainly, “cultural shock”. Hence the issues of American individualism covering individual freedom, self-reliance, equality of opportunity, competition, material wealth, and hard work are to be as threats or opportunities. In fact, we do not want to be alien in our home. The foreigners can see our culture and society in details from outside but we can not see them well. It is like fish in aquarium. Since this article is a product of American Studies discipline, it follows the characteristics of American Studies which has the main stream as interdisciplinary studies and synthesis of knowledge.
