LANGUAGE AND INTERACTION AS AN EFFECTIVE TEACHING IN AMERICAN LITERATURE

Language as a means of communication has one of significant functions to describe an event, an interaction, and an imagination. Consequently, the basic need to learn any literary work is by learning language skills. In this global era, the study of literature for students correlated with mastering language skills is very essential, because it exposes students to meaningful contexts that are replete with descriptive language and characters. The misunderstanding on a sentence will lead the students to the wrong way in interpreting literary work. It is not an easy task to teach literature, mainly American Literature. Moreover, it is undeniably true that there are only a few students who are keen on this subject. That is the teachers’ task by how the teachers themselves can give an effective teaching in American Literature class. Teaching itself is generally regarded as the process of helping individuals to obtain skills, knowledge, and quality requisite to a good personality. It is very useful for students in facing life problems, technology, chance, and the changing of era. American literature teaching also helps students to widen their knowledge and visions to understand more about some great American literary works, their thoughts and ideas, famous authors and so forth. By teaching American literature, it also invites students to be familiar with their feelings, their ideas, their attitudes toward life, God and man nature. Meanwhile, an effective teaching has any correlation with the work of effective teachers. The teachers with their high capabilities and responsibilities can give key behaviors for effective teaching in literature class correlated with language and interaction such as the purposes of learning, activities in the classroom, the place of meaning, the roles of teachers and the roles of the students.
