THE ROLES OF MULTICULTURALISM UNDERSTANDING IN TEACHING AMERICAN LITERATURE

Education and language are two of general elements of culture as the significant key in shaping cultural trait any country. Therefore the roles of multiculturalism understanding in teaching is undeniably true. Moreover the world has developed into one big area where the result of this global evolvement is amazingly great that no a single culture is immune toward the influence of other cultures. This paper merely focuses on the understanding of multiculturalism culture for teachers in teaching American literature with critical literary theory. The main objective of this writing is to examine any collaborative interaction between students and teachers that leads them to achieve a critical awareness of the cultural use of language and to acquire and use language in a powerful and meaningful way to react and change social reality. Meanwhile a work of literature is any reflection of events or phenomena in the society and expressed in several literary genres such as drama, prose, and poetry. It is also known that social environment plays an important role in creating the culture. Hence the combination of learning foreign with practicing cultural knowledge in teaching, mainly literature is greatly needed. The teachers with foresight and creativity will get success to open window and invite the students to travel across the world in understanding more about culture, to establish a clear concept of what contextual, connotation and deep meaning of sentences, to uncover the dim and the vague parts of literary work, and to get better understanding of the strong as a whole.
