DUKUNGAN BIDAN DALAM PEMBERIAN ASI EKSKLUSIF DI DESA SUMBERSARI KECAMATAN NGAMPEL KABUPATEN KENDAL

Background : At present, the number of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia is quite apprehensive, where people tend to give their children formula milk in young-age-baby. So that, it has consequences in increasing in the number of babies lost their chance in getting exclusive breastfeeding, as aresult, more than 5 million children have low-weight and around 1,7 million children’s have malnutrition. Based on the profile of Central Java’s cities in 2005, the precentages of exclusive breastfeeding were approximately 27,49%. That achievement is much lower than the target, which is 80% of babies should get exclusive breastfeeding. One of factors influencing exclusive breastfeeding in six-month-age babies is the low level of mothers’ knowledge about the benefit of breast milk for baby and for mother. Moreover, other factors are health service, health providers giving formula milk and working mothers. Midwives’ role is quite important in term of exclusive breastfeeding promotion. As a part of health provider, midwives and also doctors have to promote mothers in order to breastfeed their children exclusively. The aim of this research was describing midwives’ support in exclusive breastfeeding in Sumbersari village Ngampel district Kendal regency. Methodology : This study was conducted with cross-sectional observation analysis. The sample included all population, which was 36 participants. In additional, in order to exam correlation among variables was using Chi-Square test. Results : The results of study show 25 mothers (69,4%) whose age is lower than 30 years, 21 mothers (58,3%) which are graduated from Junior High School and 19 mothers (52,8%) which are households. Mostly mothers have good knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding, which is 23 (63,9%) and 19 mothers (52,8%) gave statement that their midwife’s support was good. Based on the chi-square statistic test, the result shows p-value 0,037, it means that there is a correlation between midwives’ support and exclusive breastfeeding mother. Based on the chi-square statistic test, the result shows p-value 0,089, it means that there is no correlation between mothers’ knowledge level about exclusive breastfeeding and their practice. We suggest that midwives should more support exclusive breastfeeding not only to breastfeeding mother, but also involving their family and society.
